H-E-B’s Read 3 Campaign • Help ensure that all Texas children enter kindergarten ready to read and ready to learn • Encourage parents and caregivers to read to their children at least three times per week • Provide families with access to free and affordable books and literacy resources • Community Outreach

  3. Increasing Access to Books • Two-week total store event in September featuring multiple bundle offers • 861,753 books have been given to our Customers through our Combo Locos and Meal Deals • Additional events celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday (March) and Dia De Los Ninos (April)

  4. Texas-Sized Book Drive H-E-B’s Read 3 program kicked off a statewide book collection campaign in September 2011

  5. Increasing Access through Redistribution Since launch, H-E-B’s Read 3 Campaign has collected: 1,517,463 books*! This has allowed us to donate 1,162,253 books to: • School Districts, Public Libraries, Operation Home Front, Summer Slide Programs, Feast of Sharing, Storybook Christmas, Pre-School Providers, Community Festivals *Does not include the books given away through Combo Locos or Meal Deals

Read 3 Family Literacy Workshop • Local • School Districts • Identify target campuses • Provide space for the group portions of the family intervention • Help identify families to participate • Provide a lead teacher • Local • H-E-B • Funding to non-profits • Curriculum & materials • H-E-B Volunteers • Gift card incentives to participating families • Local coordination • Customer Insights assists with program measurement and evaluation • Local Universities • Help provide student volunteers to serve as teachers • 3 teachers per session for each of the campuses – 2 for the children and 1 for the parents • Local • Non-Profits • Provide incremental volunteers • Help coordinate training and implementation • The Read 3 Family Literacy Workshop is part of the larger H-E-B Read 3 campaign, which provides families with the tools and resources they need to raise healthy children who are ready for Kindergarten • The family workshop provides parents with basic nutrition knowledge and teaching skills while at the same time teaching children the components of early literacy The workshops take place in the regions that H-E-B serves and brings together the local community in the following ways:

  8. Read 3 Workshop Assessment Areas Focus Focus CHILDREN PARENTS • The Read 3 Workshop targets Parents and Children in the following areas: Note: * Parent Post-Assessments were not administered for this Pilot; therefore, only child literacy outcomes will be reported.

Family Literacy Workshop Since launch, 1705 Families have completed the Read 3 Family Literacy Workshop • 20 campuses in Brownsville have graduated 680 families • 15 campuses in San Antonio have graduated 875 families • 6 campuses in Laredo have graduated 90 families • 2 campuses in Waco have graduated 20 families • 3 campuses in San Marcos have graduated 40 families

  10. 12-Week Development We are developing a 12-week Curriculum to launch in the Fall in all of our Read 3 Markets • Our goal is to provide sustainable behavior changes both academically and nutritionally by increasing the depth of our program through time and relationship building. • The expanded 12-week curriculum includes higher level literature and vocabulary, deeper background knowledge, more cultural diversity, and student domains identified by NAEYC and aligned with the Texas Pre-K Guidelines - Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical and Emotional.

Fall 2013 – Spring 2014 We will launch our 12-Week Curriculum in the Fall in all of our Read 3 Markets, including: • Brownsville • Laredo • San Antonio • Waco • San Marcos • Harlingen* Our goal is to reach 2,000 Families in the 2013-14 School Year in all of our existing markets and launch in new markets including, Beaumont, Pasadena and Edinburg.
