STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE • Get out your notes on Double Indemnity and Film Noir. • With two other partners, review what aspects of film noir are shown in Casa Blanca. • On a separate sheet of paper, write down how many elements of film noir you see in Double Indemnity. Then, briefly explain a scene in Double Indemnity which portrays this film noir element.
STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE • Let’s review the characteristics of Film Noir together. I will call upon specific people to share with us whether each element applies… • Often involves a crime • Protagonists are usually males (detectives or pessimistic or self-doubting criminals) • Women are usually sexually alluring but treacherous who selfishly lead the protagonist into danger • Usually unhappy endings
STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE • Characteristics of Film Noir (continued): • Voice-over narration by a character in the story • Setting is usually a big city (especially at night) • Common setting features: shiny, rain-slicked pavements, dark alleyways, sleazy bars, etc.
STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE • Characteristics of Film Noir (continued): • LIGHTING is used to help tell the story and to create a certain mood within the audience.
STYLISTIC ELEMENTS LIGHTING TERMS: low key lighting: emphasizes shadows and small pools of light; there is a strong contrast between light and dark areas of the shot--used often in atmospheric thrillers, horror or noir
STYLISTIC ELEMENTS LIGHTING • high contrast: harsh shafts of light and dramatic streaks of blackness
STYLISTIC ELEMENTS LIGHTING • Side-lighting = When a subject is only half-lit, the other half still in darkness. This may be suggesting uncertainty or self-division
STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE • Characteristics of Film Noir (continued): • High and low camera angles • High camera angle = the camera is high above the action and looking down upon it. • Low camera angle = the camera is placed low in relation to the action and we are looking up at it. (left: high camera angle) (below: low camera angle)
STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE As a group, decide which three element of film noir are MOST OBVIOUS in Double Indemnity. Make sure you have at least TWO examples of how each of the three film noir elements are shown in the film. Write them down on the bottom of the paper you’re working on.
STYLISTIC IMPORTANCE Congratulations, as a group, you will be able to show off your knowledge in a group essay!!! Let’s review the prompt.
ESSAY To organize this essay, you must follow a specific format. Take notes on a separate sheet of paper to help you and your group organize your argument in the most logical way possible…
ESSAY • Introduction: • Hook—Catch your readers attention with a bold statement, question, or scenario that relates to your topic. • Explain—Explain and/or expand upon your hook sentence. • Bridge—Find a logical way to connect your hook to your thesis (this may be where you need to mention the film and/or film noir). • Thesis—Make a statement that you can prove in the next three body paragraphs.
ESSAY Body Paragraphs (3 needed) • Topic statement: Make a statement about what you will prove • Explanation: Explain whatever you feel needs further expansion in your first statement • Evidence: Prove what you say with specific data, quotes or a very specific summary • Explanation: Explain exactly what your evidence proves. • Evidence: One piece of evidence is not enough; always give a second specific piece of evidence to prove your point. • Explanation: Explain what your evidence proves • Conclude: Explain the importance of what you proved..
ESSAY • Conclusion: • Restate thesis—Restate your position on the subject, in different words. • Summarize—Summarize your main arguments in the essay. • Apply—Explain how your essay applies to the reader. • Conclusion—Conclude with one final, powerful statement that gives your essay a “finished” feeling.
ESSAY An example of a paragraph that follows the body paragraph format: In the movie Sunset Boulevard, long shots are effectively used to help the audience understand the grandiose and often frightening setting. Long shots are camera shots in which human figures are visible, but the setting dominates the audience’s view, helping the viewers to comprehend the location and details of the setting better. We see the impact of long shots early in the film when the main character– Joe Gillis– walks up stairs to find a huge, apparently empty mansion in front of him. When the audience sees this mansion, it reveals just how small Joe Gillis is in comparison to what he has just stumbled across. Furthermore, the great size of the mansion creates an intimidating feeling for even the audience, as we are left wondering who could possibly reside in such a large, but seemingly empty place. Later in the film, we see another long shot from inside the mansion, but this time, we see a butler escorting a man into the mansion from afar; the man is carrying a small coffin and the lighting is very low. This long shot is important because it helps the audience to understand the hugeness of the mansion, the emptiness of the mansion, and the seemingly eerie events that happen within this huge mansion. The lighting also helps create a mysterious, uneasy feeling about the strange events occurring within this strange place. Without these long shots, the audience would have little understanding of how huge the mansion (the main setting) is, how empty this place seems and how small the characters are in comparison to this mansion– all of which is important in understanding the main ideas in the film.
ESSAY Using the format that was given to you, let’s write an outline for your essay. Use the following two slides to come up with an outline (using your own sheet of paper): Outline of thesis (main idea in your essay): • Name the film that you will be discussing:_________________________________ • Name the film style that you’ll be proving it is:____________________________ • Write the three elements that prove that the film demonstrates this style 1. 2. 3. Now, come up with a way to put these three bullet points together in a sentence: ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ *Note: Do not ever say “I will prove” “This essay will show” or anything of that nature (it’s bad essay etiquette!). Instead, start: “In the films…” etc.
OUTLINE Evidence A Element #1: (note: see thesis for a reminder…) Outline (continued): Evidence B Evidence A Element #2 Evidence B Evidence A Element #3 Evidence B
ESSAY NOTES TOMORROW: We will fast-forward through the film so that you can re-watch specific scenes that are needed for evidence. *In other words, if your memory does not allow you to remember the details of specific scenes, this will be your chance to review the film to be more specific with your evidence for you essay!
