  1. Family Science “Grounded in the belief that parents are their children’s primary teachers, Family Science is an informal, hands-on education program that gives parents and children a chance to explore the world of science together.” www.familyscience.org San Diego Unified School District - Science Department

  2. About Doing Science “Students should be actively involved in exploring phenomena that interest them both in and out of class. These investigations should be fun and exciting, opening the door to even more things to explore. An important part of students’ exploration is telling others what they see, what they think, and what it makes them wonder about. Children should have lots of time to talk about what they observe and to compare their observations with those of others.” - AAAS, Benchmarks for Science Literacy San Diego Unified School District - Science Department

  3. Building a Strong Science Foundation at Home Ways to support the natural curiosity of your child… even if you’re not a science whiz! San Diego Unified School District - Science Department

  4. Building a Strong Science Foundation at Home Encourage questions- especially those which have multiple answers (even if you don’t know the answer) - investigate together to find the answer

  5. Building a Strong Science Foundation at Home Ask open-ended questions - Avoid using right and wrong (unless a moral or safety issue is at stake). Have children explain their answer by saying… That’s an interesting idea - tell me more. Why does that answer make sense? San Diego Unified School District - Science Department

  6. Building a Strong Science Foundation at Home Encourage divergent approaches to everyday situations (within reason) Let children invent new ways to get their chores done •Make getting dressed in the morning a game- challenge them to get dressed under their covers (they come out of bed ready for the day) •Turn sorting laundry into a game - shot baskets with dirty laundry, one basket for colors and one for whites (clothes are sorted and ready to be washed) San Diego Unified School District - Science Department

  7. Building a Strong Science Foundation at Home Help your child tolerate some uncertainty - In today’s fast paced world people are used to getting answers in seconds - sometimes science takes time, solutions aren’t known until several hypotheses have been tried. San Diego Unified School District - Science Department

  8. Building a Strong Science Foundation at Home Practice “guess and test” - “I’m not sure what will happen if we put lemonade in the Jello instead of water - let’s guess some possibilities and then test it and see what happens.” San Diego Unified School District - Science Department
