Louis XIV Legacy • 73 year reign • Feudal lords and Catholic Church surrendered power to the king • France largest cultural and military power • Extensive overseas empire • Wars were costly • Louis expenditures created unprecedented misery for the masses- Versailles- key symbol of Louis • Increased tax burden • Name was cursed when they carried his body down streets

PETER THE GREAT LEGACY • Changed the Russian calendar • Established fashion/clothing- via factories that made cloth, sheep raised to make wool • Cultivated land for basic food • Raised taxes as high as 350% • Ruthless to those who opposed him • Sent Russians to Europe to learn their ways and helped Westernize Russia • Monarch from age 10
