  2. More trouble for transatlantic relations? • Bush vs. Kerry • US Election November 2nd • What are the real differences in policy? (res. 1441) • If Bush wins… • If Kerry wins…

What impact on internal EU politics? “In Europe, Bush is not a Brand that travels well………a mix of nationalism, arrogance and unilateralism” “For Kerry, expectations would be much higher, and therefore there will be disappointment…” “The world deserves better than testosterone on one side and superciliousness on the other” “Observers believe a second Bush term would paradoxically reunite Europe” “If Bush wins, the agony can only get greater for Blair…”

The disagreements that wont go away • Kyoto and climate control • Trade issues • International Criminal Court & International Institutions • EU vs US way of fighting terrorism • US quotes: • “Europeans do not have the stomach for a protracted conflict…..Europe is soft” (Colombian MBA student – ESADE) • “The French are cheese eating surrender monkeys” (US politician) • EU quotes • “One can go to war alone, but you can't build peace alone.” (Chirac) • “If there is one thing Britain should learn from the last 50 years, it is this: Europe can only get more important for us.” (Blair) • “I will listen to Mr Bush but my position is very clear and very firm. The occupation is a fiasco. There have been almost more deaths after the war than during the war.” (Zapatero)

And finally…..and maybe • Europe’s national anthem wins the Eurovision song contest in wave of euro nationalism • The UK drops out of Europe and become 51st US state in 2005 after a no vote to the constitution • Spain will join the Mexican federation in 2008 • French becomes the official language in all EU countries
