Wrong or Missing Verb Ending • Error • Forgetting to add –s, -es, -ed, or –d to end of word when necessary. • Correction • Form past/past participle—add –d or –ed to present form (Ex: shop-shopped, type-typed). • Add –s to verb in 3rd person singular (Ex: grow-grows, prance-prances, stop-stops)
Tense Shifting/Choosing Wrong Tense or Verb Form • Error • Shifting from present to past to present inconsistently. • Correction • Choose a tense (present, past, etc.) and stick to it. • Be sure the verb form you choose is accurate for what you what to convey.
Six Common Tenses • Present (ongoing) • Past (happened once) • Future (will occur in future) • Present Perfect (began in past, continues in present) LOOK FOR “HAS/HAVE” • Past Perfect (began and ended before something else happened) LOOK FOR “HAD” • Future Perfect (will end in future before a certain time)
Subject-Verb Agreement Errors • Errors • Verb does not agree with subject in number and person • Corrections/Notes • Find subject and verb • Pronouns who/which/that may be singular or plural, depending on their antecedents • Plural in form, singular in meaning=sing. Verb (mathematics, measles, statistics, mumps)
