Windows Compressed (zipped) Folder • To zip a folder means to store data in a format that requires less space than usual. • Microsoft Windows XP SP2 has built-in Zip compression (Only use Winzip.) • Other OS versions may also have it. • If not, Winzip is a utility that can be used. • Winzip is available as a trial version at http://www.winzip.com

Windows Compressed (zipped) Folder • To create a zip folder • Right click on a folder • Click “Send To” • Click “Compressed (zipped) Folder” • After selecting the “Compressed (zipped) Folder” menu option, the folder will be zipped and you should now see a folder that ends with .ZIP and has a zipper on the folder. • The name of the zipped folder will be the same name as the unzipped folder.

  5. How to Extract a Folder • In order to view and modify files or folders that have been zipped, we must first extract the files and folders back to their original size. • Right-click on a ZIP file or folder and select the “Extract All...” menu option:

Extraction Wizard • Enter the path where you would like the files to be saved. • In the image shown files will be extracted to the directory d:\extracthere. • If that directory does not exist, it will be created. • After you type in the location where you want the files to be extracted, press the Next button.

Extraction Wizard • The folder/files have now been extracted. • To see the extracted files, leave the checkmark in place, otherwise uncheck the box labeled Show extracted files. • Then press the Finish button. • Now your files are extracted into the directory you have specified and you can begin to use them.
