InnovationAmerica’s Greatest Strength By Varun Jain
“Innovation” is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “a new idea, method, or device” • America has changed the landscape of human life through innovations in the past and continuing to do so in the future. • Innovation is definitely America’s greatest strength and is the foundation for current and future generations of the mankind.
Innovation is as old as mankind itself. There seems to be something inherently "American" about the tendency to think about new and better ways of doing things and to try them out in practice. Without it, the world in which we live would look very, very different. Try for a moment to think of a world without – • Light bulb – The number of building and lives light bulbs have illuminated are countless – Invented by Thomas Alva Edison (1880) NJ America. • Camera – Unique ability to capture your thoughts for ever and pass them on to future generations – An ability brought to us by George Eastman (1884) NY America
3. Airplane – Wright brothers, American inventors and aviation pioneers, achieved the first powered, sustained, and controlled flight of an airplane on the morning of 1903 NC America 4. Telephone:. In the 1870s, Alexander Graham Bell created the first operating telephone. This was an exceptional discovery, because there was nothing else like it at the time. Individuals were able to contact others with the click of a couple of buttons, a revolutionary technology. First clear message sent 1876 MA America.
Computer - John W. Mauchly & John P. Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania developed ENIAC, the first practical electronic digital computer. 1930, PA (IBM), America • Ethernet / Internet – Robert Metcalfe developed a rudimentary form of the internet we know today. First as a system to assist communication between military personnel. In the 1980’s the internet became linked to schools, laboratories, and businesses. By 1996, the internet was opened to the general public with an original forty million users. Today, that number has burgeoned to 1.5 billion users in 160 countries worldwide. Allowing the world to become a “global village”. First Ethernet established 1973 America.
7 The Human Genome Project- The HGP was the first successful attempt to decode the human genome. With the information that resulted from this, medical researchers are in the process creating cures for the current banes of humanity such as cancer and HIV. America! 8 The US Highway System- Under Dwight Eisenhower’s term, the national highway system was conceived. The highway system allowed states all over the country to become connected, a revolutionary idea that is now implicated in almost every developed country. America! 9 The Marshall Plan: An ingenious plan set up by Secretary of State George Marshall, this system promoted democracy and weakened communism. Many military analysts agree that without this plan the Cold War might have come to an end in a nuclear holocaust. America!
Similarly I can go on and on about the innovative methods for which America has long been known as a land of opportunity and the epicenter of innovation, a breeding ground for the synthesis of revolutionary ideas, methods, and technological inventions. • It began with our nation's birth in 1787, when the Constitution was drafted by Congress; this national constitution is unique in that it encompassed the idea that the power lie within the people, and it has evolved to support innovation and the growing the power of thought rather than regulation.
Furthermore, America is the melting pot of the world, a pot in which the contents are constantly changing and new ingredients are being introduced. Immigrants from all over the world arrive at our so-called "land of opportunity" to exercise their ideas in a land where freedom and a capitalistic market based on the laws of supply and demand prevail. • Due to this a tremendous amount of American innovations are omnipresent and important to the modern society.
Let’s look at the video clip where our president Mr. Obama talks about innovation in science and technology and future direction. • http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/289333-1 • 4:16 – 7:00
Now let me shed some light on the futuristic directions in the area of innovation that are determined to change the humanity for good and for ever. • Stem cell research: The patents covering a lot of work on human embryonic stem cells are owned by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) America! • Medical researchers believe that stem cell therapy has the potential to dramatically change the treatment of human disease.
A number of adult stem cell therapies already exist, particularly bone marrow transplants that are used to treat leukemia. In the future, medical researchers anticipate being able to use technologies derived from stem cell research to treat a wider variety of diseases including cancer, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and muscle damage, amongst a number of other impairments and conditions. • Changing the human sciences for ever just like telecommunications changed this world is just another name of innovation leading to a disease free human race.
Green energy is the term used to describe sources of energy that are considered to be environmentally friendly and non-polluting, such as geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro. Sometimes nuclear power is also considered a green energy source. Green energy sources are often considered "green" because they are perceived to lower carbon emissions and create less pollution. • America is investing heavily in the space of green energy. Under Mr. Obama's administration and direction remarkable progress is being made at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is the nation's primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development (R&D).
NREL's mission and strategy are focused on advancing the U.S. Department of Energy's and our nation's energy goals. • The laboratory's scientists and researchers support critical market objectives to accelerate research from scientific innovations to market-viable alternative energy solutions. • The laboratory thereby directly contributes to our nation's goal for finding new renewable ways to power our homes, businesses, and cars.
Astronomy • From stepping on the moon to landing rovers on to mars NASA is soaring new dimensions in the space of astronomy to answers the questions about our existence. • “Parallel universe” is a theory today but could it be true? • Do we have our replicas somewhere in this universe? • Sounds like a fiction movie like startrek but again who thought there could be televisions and cell phones in as late as 20th century.
Innovation means solving a puzzle, innovation means applying it for the betterment of masses, Innovation stands for unachievable and That’s the America I want, we all strive for!
