What is the Diploma Programme? The Diploma is a challenging two year programme of international education for students aged 16 to 19.
What is different about the IB Diploma ? The aim of the Diploma is for students to prove where their strengths lie academically and personally. The Programme prepares students for university.

The Core • Theory of Knowledge (ToK) • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) • Extended Essay
Group 1 Languages • Language A1 • A literature course • Students normally take this subject in their best language, both spoken and written
Group 2 Languages • Second Language • The emphasis is on language acquisition and usage • Three different levels are offered: • ab initio • language B • language A2
Groups 3 & 4 • Group 3: Individuals and Society • Economics • Geography • History • Group 4: Experimental Sciences • Biology • Chemistry • Physics
Groups 5 & 6 • Group 5: Mathematics • Maths HL • Maths SL • Maths Studies SL • Group 6: Art (or elective subject) • Visual Arts • Music Alternatively students may follow a second subject chosen from Groups 2 – 4, depending on the school’s current timetable.
ASSESSMENT All courses include internal assessment. Final assessment is by external examinations taken in all subjects in May of Year 13. Each subject is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum).
DIPLOMA The student must gain a minimum total of 24 points and the satisfactory completion of the three core requirements. ToK and the Extended Essay combine to contribute a possible 3 additional points to the overall score, giving a maximum Diploma score of 45 points.
CERTIFICATE The student takes the same exams as a Diploma candidate but does not complete the core. They therefore gain individual grades for each of the six subjects.
BILINGUAL DIPLOMA • two language As • studies group 3 or 4 subjects or completes a group 3 or 4 EE, in a language other than his or her language A1
Universities and the IB • Preferred to many national academic qualifications e.g. A-levels • Gives better indication of students’ abilities, especially if no interview (international students) • Allows fine-tuning of entry requirements • Prepares students better for tertiary study (e.g. can skip 1st year in some cases in US)
