Shields • The main defensive weapon • Could be used to block and hit opponent • Diameter of about 80-90cm or bigger • Thickness of less then 10mm • Made from planks of wood
Swords • Really experienced warriors got best swords • Blade length of 60-80cm • Combined with shield(sword in one hand, shield in other) • Weighed about 2.5 lbs • Types: double-edged, straight bladed, and slight taper
Spears • Most common weapon of the Viking warrior • Consisted of metal heads(20-60cm) • Heads were mounted to wooden shaft(2-3m) • Larger-headed spears were used for cutting • Throwing and thrusting weapon
Battle-Axes • Inlaid with silver designs • Axe heads measuring up to 45cm • Most wrought iron, with steel cutting edge • Standard items produced by blacksmiths (historically)
Bow and Arrow • Used for hunting and in battle • Made from yew, ash, or elm trees • Draw force of over 100 pounds • Effective range of at least 250m • Arrowheads were typically made from iron
Helmet • Made of iron • Rounded cap • Has “spectacle” around the eyes and nose • One of the main pieces of armour • Some Vikings wore more simple helmets (than the one in the image)
Knife(Seax) • Large, single-edged knife • Deadly side-arm in war • Wealthier man might own a larger seax than others • Frequently used in England and Scandinavia through Viking history
