  1. GEW country website guide for Hosts

  2. Intro • As a GEW country host, you have been given a website template to use to promote the Week in both your country and to a global audience. • Only hosts have ‘editorial rights’ that allow you to edit the text and layout of your country site • The URL of your country website is www.unleashingideas.org/countryname • To edit your country website, you must be logged in as an ‘Editor’. If you have not received an e-mail invitation to join your country website, or do not have Editor permission, please notify chris@makeyourmark.org.uk • We’ve added ‘Top tips’ throughout the website (they look like yellow post-it notes) to suggest ways you can customize your website. This guide supplements those tips. Only Editors can see these Top tips, and you can delete them after reading.

  3. Getting started • There are a number of things you can do right away to customize your website template. The following slides will show you how to do each, but to summarize they are: • Customizing your partner registration form questions • Uploading your company’s logo to the homepage • Translating page names • Translating module headers • Translating other text • Featuring your national partners and sponsors • Updating your main homepage image (‘masthead’) • Featuring your national events and activities • Adding any other modules • Using the Styles tab (or not!) • Using the Members tab • Checking your stats

  4. Customizing your partner registration form questions • As a default, your partner registration form questions are set in English. If you want to change this for a translated version, or revise any of the text, please email chris@makeyourmark.org.ukimmediately! (Before making any other changes to your website as these may get lost) • You can see your registration form questions by clicking on the Members tab, and then Members form.

  5. Uploading your company’s logo to the homepage • There is a box underneath the Featured Video where you can upload a small version of your company logo, and list your company’s name. Click ‘edit’ to change this module. Make sure your logo is not too large, or it will run over the borders – 300px width is good.

  6. Translating page names • Click on the ‘Settings’ tab • A full list of the website pages will appear. You can type over the English page names with your translated text, and then click save.

  7. Translating module headers Click ‘edit’ on the module (top right corner) and change the text in the Title field.

  8. Translating other text • Click to edit the module and simply replace the default text with language of your own. If you want to translate text but are unable due to ‘locked content’, please let us know.

  9. Featuring your national partners and sponsors • We have created two pages for you to promote your key stakeholders • unleashingideas.org/countryname/national_partners • unleashingideas.org/countryname/national_sponsors • There are text modules on each page – click edit and input the logos and descriptions of your national partners and sponsors

  10. Updating your main homepage image (‘masthead’) • If you would like to change the masthead on your country homepage, download the source file, make your edits (e.g. change the picture, translate the text, insert other graphics) and e-mail the new file back to chris@makeyourmark.org.uk. It will take a day or two for the new image to be uploaded to the server. The more creative you can be, the better! • If you want to make your own masthead image from scratch, note it must be 370px height by 954px width and be saved in PNG or JPEG format. • You may have more than one image (max 5) in random rotation, just email through the additional files.

  11. Featuring your national events and activities • We have created a page for you to promote your key national events and activities • unleashingideas.org/countryname/activities_calendar • There is a text module on that page entitled ‘National activities’ – click ‘edit’ and input the details about your events here.

  12. Adding any other modules • Your country website is built on a platform (‘Webjam’) that supports lots of different types of content—from text, to video, to RSS feeds, to bulletin boards, and the list goes on! • You can add any number of these types of content through the ‘Modules’ tab at the top of your edit screen. They are divided by types – e.g. My Content (e.g. text, files, Free HTML), Media (e.g. Flickr feed, mp3, YouTube videos), Widgets (e.g. Poll, make your own). You can easily add any of these modules by clicking on the ‘+ to page’ button, or by dragging the module into its position on the page. • For a guide on how to use modules, or any other part of Webjam, visit http://www.webjam.com/how_to_guides

  13. Using the Styles tab • As a Host, you will have access to the Styles tab on your country website. From here you can change the overall style of your website. We recommend that you do NOT change any style settings in your website, as this will remove many of the GEW design elements that are already integrated within it, which will be hard to retrieve! • If you wish to discuss changing any Style settings in your country website, please email chris@makeyourmark.org.uk

  14. Using the Members tab • The three main things you can do under the Members tab are: • Set join permissions to your community. We recommend you set this to ‘Anyone can join’ – that way, you won’t have to individually approve each member (which will be time consuming, and a discouragement to new members!) • Monitor and invite new members. This tab will show you what new members have joined your community, and give you some background information on them. You can also input email addresses to invite new members to join. • Send an e-newsletter or message to your members. • Tick the box above all the members so that they all automatically get ticked • Click on ‘Send newsletter’ in the Contact Members box on the left • Then you get sent to the input screen, which looks like most CMS boxes. Type your newsletter text here.  Remember to insert the subject. • Click send!

  15. Checking your stats • You can easily monitor basic statistics about your website using the Stats tab. From here you can see the total amount of page views and visits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. • For more detailed stats, you may want to add a Google Analytics code to your website. If you have a code that you wish to include, email chris@makeyourmark.org.uk for more detailed instructions.

  16. Any other questions? • If you have more questions or ideas, please post them first on the website message board – www.unleashingideas.org/grouphub/website • Alternatively, you can email chris@makeyourmark.org.uk
