  1. Do Now 1/29 and 1/30, 2014 • Who is the most interesting person that you have ever heard of, while studying history. Why do you find them different? Do most people perceive them as heroic, strange, extremely lucky, or some other adjective? • If you could go back in time, would you want to meet this person? Why, or why not? • What was their impact, if any, on those around them and the events of their time?

  2. I What led to the Russian Revolution? A. Russo-Japanese War: Japan defeats Russia in 1905 B. Bloody Sunday: Opposition to Czarist regime 1. Workers go to Winter Palace to present grievances on January 22, 1905 2. Troops open fire on peaceful demonstration, killing hundreds (accident?) 3. Workers strike throughout Russia, the Duma (legislative assembly) is created, however, within a few years the czar had limited its power

  3. II Who were the Romanovs? A. Czar (tsar) Nicholas II came to the throne in 1894 with German wife Alexandra (granddaughter of Queen Victoria) B. Four daughters and one son- Alexei, who had hemophilia (blood clotting disease) C. Fragile autocracy due to illness D. Alexandra first tries doctors to help her son then eventually turns to the mystic Grigori Rasputin E. Rasputin is unpopular and not trusted by Russian people, killed December, 1916 by Czar loyalists

Provisional government headed by Alexander Kerensky, decides to remain in war D. Soviets (councils of workers and soldier representatives) challenge govt. authority E. Bolsheviks under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin gain power

Executed in July, 1918 G. Lenin signs Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March, 1918 1. Russia out of WWI 2. Gives up Ukraine, Finland, Baltic Provinces, and Eastern Poland

Others wanted to create a democracy in Russia C. Red Army was organized and effective 1. Began a “Red Terror” aimed at the destruction of those who opposed Communism D. Foreign troops in Russia made it easier for the Communists to appeal to patriotism 1. Over 100,000 foreign troops in country (Japanese, British, American, and French)
