4IR and Gaming: Opportunities and Challenges Prof Janet Wesson, Department of Computing Sciences, Nelson Mandela University GRAF 2019 Conference, 20 August 2019
Recent Developments in Gaming • Introduction of online gaming; • Convergence between land-based and online gaming; • Growth in omni-channel gaming in some countries; • Large amounts of data stored in gaming systems; • Increasing use of data analytics to personalise the player experience; • Use of systems to support Responsible Gaming; and • Use of Anti-Money Laundering features to provide warning alerts.
Research and Development • Data analytics is playing an increasing role. • Development of Cloud and Hosted Services; • New technology such as facial recognition and fingerprint reading; • Improving integration between systems; and • Allowing game content to be downloaded to machines and configured remotely.
Gambling using AI • Example: RAIN MAN 2.0, Blackjack AI • See Youtube video at: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf3zBJ2cDAs
Challenges • Gambling is a highly regulated industry; • Data privacy and security is an issue; • Elements of superstition exist in some countries, such as Asia; • Some countries have specific laws restricting the capture of marketing data; • Interoperability challenges exist between different systems; and • Most widely used machine communication protocol is SAS, which has become an industry standard.
Conclusions • The 4IR offers many opportunities for innovation. • Key aspects include big data, cloud computing, IoT, and AI. • Applications include healthcare, smart homes, and entertainment. • 50% population will need some reskilling.
