Industrial Hemp Cannabis refers to the products derived from the plant of Cannabis called Cannabis Sativa. Sometimes Cannabis is used to mention the Cannabis Sativa plant. The cannabis plant contains about 540 chemical substances. Cannabis is also referred to as Marijuana sometimes, it contains low amounts of (THC) tetrahydrocannabinol . THC is the major substance due to which a person’s mental health is affected with Marijuana. What are Cannabinoids? Cannabinoids are compounds found in the plant Cannabis Sativa. Among 480 different compounds of the plant, only 66 are termed cannabinoids. One of the main and well-known compounds tetrahydrocannabinol which is a main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. of Cannabis is delta-9- Another well-known compound is Cannabidiol (CBD) which makes up about 40% of the plant resin extract. THC and CBD are naturally occurring components of the Cannabis plant that are extracted directly from the plant. It is used to manufacture drug products. Industrial Hemp Some Cannabis plants contain very little amount of THC and are high in fibres. These plants are considered Industrial Hemp rather than Marijuana. Industrial hemp is a compound of the plant Cannabis Sativa that is used globally to produce a variety of industrial and consumer products. Hemp paper, fibres, bioplastic, hemp board, hempcrete, and other industrial and pharmaceutical materials are widely made from Hemp.
NAPL Collaboration with IIT Kanpur for Research on Cannabis Cannabis is widely known for its medicinal benefits and also has a referral in Atharva Veda. It has been used in India for more than 5000 years but also has faced massive criticism and backlash due to its mind-altering effects. Cannabis is acknowledged worldwide for its magical properties. Because of its proven medical benefits, it is well inscribed in Ayurveda as a healing component. The use of Cannabis is very common in various cultures and traditions. Despite that cultivation of cannabis having more than 0.03% THC level is prohibited in India as per government regulations. Niche Agriculture and Pharmaceuticals Limited (NAPL) collaborated with IIT Kanpur last year for setting the groundwork for reorganizing the indigenous cannabis plant and creating new hemp cultivars that adhere to international regulations. This collaboration has the aim to focus on research, development, and consultancy studies in fields of mutual interest. NAPL is looking forward to exploring the solutions to Chronic diseases such as Cancer, Epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Cirrhosis migraine, chronic pain, arthritis, and insomnia in India. This extensive research by NAPL on the usage of Cannabis in pharma and in the treatment of these chronic diseases aims to grant access to a whole new
range of medicinal formulations. The main focus of the research is the exploration of cannabis plants for the progression of the healthcare sector. Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-Kanpur) is helping NAPL in laying a foundation to restructure the indigenous cannabis plant and develop new varieties of hemp seeds/cultivars as per international policies & standards. Conclusion The ongoing research by NAPL has the goal of formulation of hemp-based and other medicines for chronic diseases.
