  1. Lesson 16 Day 2

  2. Read Aloud: Listening Comprehension Today I will read a passage from a nonfiction book about 4 young inventors Remember that nonfiction text: • tells about real people, events, or situations. • is meant to provide information in an interesting way. Listen for information as I read “Up in Smoke” One purpose for listening is to learn what new idea the young inventors came up with.

  3. Discussion • Based on what you read in the selection, is it easy or difficult to come up with an invention?

  4. Focus Skill: Fact and Opinion

  5. Some words and phrases that signal an opinion are: should, must be, best, worst, I think, &I believe

  6. The sentence “A water bike can travel at about six miles per hour” is a fact. You could check it by timing the water bike with a stopwatch. The author’s statement that the water bike is an amazing invention is an opinion. You can’t prove this.

  7. Now read the third paragraph, and think about your reading rate.

  8. Would you read this paragraph more quickly or more slowly than the first paragraph?

  9. Let’s practice our vocabulary words for the week:

  10. tinker When you tinker with something, you try to fix or adjust it. What profession is good for someone who likes to tinker?

  12. trampled If you trampled something, you stepped on it very hard and damaged it. What did George Washington want horses to trample in his barn?

  13. forged If you forged something together, you did it with great effort and you hope it lasts a long time. Why would the author say that Thomas Edison forged a crew?
