Beginning • We will introduce students to this Ojibwe study by teaching about the medicine wheel • Students will create a medicine wheel that they can share • Ojibwe culture/words on one side and information about themselves on other
Webquest • The time machine’s compass is broken and the class has been launched back in time to a Minnesota Ojibwe village pre-European contact. In order to return you must survive a season as part of an Ojibwe family-improving your skills and knowledge of native ways. Only these skills and knowledge can fuel the machine and repair the compass.
Refueling the Time Machine • Students will need to adopt the role of a tribal family member. • Students will learn through internet links, speaker, book research. • Students will record experiences in a Journey Guide • Students will share knowledge and teach newly learned skills. • Students will compare life in a village to life now • Students will communicate in the Anishinabe language and show respect.
The Task • The class will be divided into groups • Each group is an Ojibwe family working together in a different season.
The Process • Each family will have four members. • Elder • Adult • Young Adult • Child
Elder • Elder is the teacher in the family • Complete Journey Guide • Design/Teach whole class a lesson/craft • Winter = Beadwork • Spring = Games • Summer = Basketry • Fall = Fishing
Adult • Adult is the provider in the family • They will do research about the Food, Clothing and Shelter of their season and construct a diorama • Include • Beadwork/fire for winter • Maple and games for spring • Birch and baskets for summer • Wild rice and fishing for fall
Young Adult • Young Adults will research and prepare a “Then and Now” bulletin board • To include Food Clothing and Shelter for each season and… • Winter = beadwork/moccasin • Spring = games/tobacco • Summer = birch use/pow-wow • Fall = fishing/smudging
Child • Oral Traditions • Child will complete journey guide and keep language and oral traditions alive by learning and sharing. Winter = legends Spring = publish maple sugar how to book Summer = publish birch legend storybook Fall = publish how to ricing book
Coming Together • As a whole family group, students will prepare to teach the class 4-8 most important Anishinabe words and meanings of their seasons. This will be in powerpoint format.
Coming Together • Also they will present groups idea of Native RESPECT through seasonal teamwork. Presentation can be in the form of: • Cinquain poem • Song • Free Form Collage • Wordle
Conclusion • Students will come together as a group to share and compare skills and knowledge gained to refuel the machine and repair the compass and return to 2008? • Did you survive a season? • Did you improve your knowledge of native ways? • Are your experiences recorded in the guide? • Are you prepared to share and teach your skills? • Can you communicate in the Anishinabe language and show respect?
