Traditionally five pelagic species are objects of the Russian fishery in the North East Atlantic. • Atlanto-scandian herring (Norwegian spring-spawning) • Bluewhiting • Northeast-AtlanticMackerel • Capelin (Barents Sea) • Polar Cod

PINRO participates in all basic surveys which estimate a condition of the stocks pelagic fishes in the NEA • International ecosystem survey in the Nordic Seas in May. • International ecosystem survey in the Barents Sea in September. • International Blue whiting spawning stock survey in April. • National surveys in the Norwegian and Barents Seas.
Pelagic complex has great value in economy of Russia. In 2009 commercial fleet from 4 regions of the Russia have caught about 500 thousand т of the pelagic fishes in NEA. • Stocks of the Capelin, Polar Cod and Northeast-AtlanticMackerel are relatively stable. • The stock of the Norwegian spring-spawning herring has the negative tendency and will decrease the next years. It is necessary to think about revision of the management plan for the purpose of reduction negative effect to national of fishery. • The stock of the Bluewhiting comes nearer to a collapse!
