What was the Caste war? • The revolt of native Maya people of Yucatán (Mexico) against the population of European descent (called Yucatecos) in political and economic control.
Where it occurred? • In Yucatan Mexico
Causes of the war • Social structure; the Mayawere at the bottom of the social pyramid • The European Yucatecos were expanding their territory and having private ownership of lands (HENEQUEN and SUGARCANE) • The Maya were defending their communal lands
The war began • Yucatan was a free nation • The Maya (Icaiche and Santa Cruz) were defeating the Yucatecos; Maya went back to their fields to plant • The Mexican republic aided; Yucateco forces: pushed back the Maya for more than half of the state. • Yucatecos: North west; Maya: southeast European Yucatecos Maya; South east
The course of the War • The Maya attacked constantly • Their major city was Chan Santa Cruz • Followers were called Cruzob
The British! • The Maya were buying gunpowder from the British • The Mexican Government reached an agreement with Britain • The Guns and ammunitions were not sold anymore to the Maya
The end of the War; 1901 • The Mexican army managed to gain control over Chan Santa Cruz • The Maya retreated and still waged attacks • The Maya never defeated the Mexican forces again
Comic Strip of Caste War European Yucatecos begin to meet the Icaiche and Santa Cruz Maya and confrontation begins. European Yucatecos living in the North west and the Maya in the Southern area. European Yucatecos wanted land to plant Henequen and Sugarcane. The social system was suppressive of the Maya. Santa Cruz stay alone but get guns and ammunitions from the British until the British signed an agreement with the Mexicans. Yucatecos join the Mexicans (with conditions) to fight the Maya. The Mexicans, and Yucatecos managed to convince the Icaiche to get on their side. Yucatecos, Mexicans, and Icaiche defeated the Santa Cruz Maya. Yucatan annexed to Mexico and Icaiche rights were not respected.
