  3. Move map centre Hold down mouse, curser changes to hand, drag map to new location To move small distances: use arrow keys To move large distances: zoom out before dragging

  8. Choices - zoom Click on the zoom icons – Zoom in to get more detail Zoom out to see more parties

  10. Information Connection to internet is active – can see other teams operating Time Mode: Radio connected, Not connected, Replay mode Grid ref of curser position Updates as you scroll

R in corner shows transmission is remote – over the Internet not directly through our base set Radio – signal strength Bars show signal strength at last transmission Greyed out radio had no connection to base over the last 10 minutes - Could be because of terrain or a duff battery – base may want to consider contacting other members of the party or use phone/pager contact for urgent message

  12. Base radio will poll all radios every 2 minutes. If poll keeps failing, after 10 mins radio goes grey. If poll succeeds, but GPS lock has failed, then GPS replaced by GPS Radio – ID, time and location Current GPS data: Radio ID – Mike 14 T Binks Time last contacted – 10:58:46 Time elapsed – 1m:12secs Last Grid Ref – SD 22041 88317 MM1 and MM2 will show as non-GPS radios Base and MM3 will not show at all (despite image above!)

  13. Radios with GPS mics • Need time to lock on to establish grid ref • Will show flashing icon if not locked on • Will show solid icon when locked on • Will lock on more quickly if recently used – because they hold data for satellite positions recently seen • If radio has not been used, take it out once a week until you get a lock to keep data valid

  14. Call out sequence • Computer always on at base so when pager goes: • Switch radio on as you leave home – press PTT to signal to base –non GPS radios not polled automatically • Once first radio is picked up, base starts looking for others • First person to base opens lid of laptop and checks that it is on

  15. Laptop display • Should show those members on their way who are in range – position for those with GPS, “left home” for those without • May already be cluttered by radios received over previous days – just ignore them (This will change so only radios seen in last 4 hours will be displayed. Other teams will be grouped) • Should pick up MM2 as it comes over the top of Grizebeck

  16. Allocating parties • GPS radio in every party • GPS radios for base managers to be allocated to Search Group Leaders – swap radios not mics • Check early on that GPS has locked on and is giving signal • If GPS not locking on – check mic is not blocked by body, buildings, trees etc – turn radio off and then on again and wait

  17. Taking Laptop to MM3 • Save current map – details later • Switch off laptop – one press and wait • Disconnect all connections and wires • Take to MM3 connect to radio lead and mouse • Switch on - one press and wait • Use on battery to avoid DC Converter noise – press button next to On to reduce power consumption

  18. Radios on the hills • GPS holders should check regularly that their radio is still locked on • Click PTT once to mark a significant position • At casualty site, keep radios on but turn the volume right down

  19. Saving map data 1 • At the end of a session save the data • Click File • Click Save As … • Should go to Maps folder • Name it as • Callout dd-mm-yy • Practice dd-mm-yy • Click Save • Close laptop lid 2 3 5 4
