  2. Impressionism was the first form of painting that defined modern art. Much of these paintings were created to explore the way light fell on the objects of our world.

  3. Claude Monet was a pioneer in the impressionism movement. His works were not commissioned by wealthy patrons, but rather about the humans’ admiration of nature. His works were about the way light fell on our world and the colors it produced.

  4. Conceptual Art A playful man, Duchamp challenged conventional thought about artistic processes and art marketing, not so much by writing, but through subversive actions such as dubbing a urinal art and naming it Fountain.

  5. Pop Art helps conceptual art grow into post-modern era

  6. Pop CultureThe emergence of mass media

  7. Popular culture is deemed as what is popular within the social context.

  8. As the 50’s Drew to a close the quantity and vividness of information grew by leaps and bounds. The number of homes that owned television sets jumped from ten thousand (1947) to forty million(1957).

  11. Pop art, which came along just as mass advertising and television took their quantum leap, celebrated media stars and consumer culture. Almost instantly art became a popular interest nationwide. Growing numbers of people attended openings at local museums and art centers; they took art classes and subscribed to art magazines; and for the first time the demand for fine art exceeded the supply.

  12. Pop artists made it a point to recognize that the imagery of mass culture, rather than encounter with nature, defined the norms of the contemporary world.

  13. Roy Lichtenstein dedicated his artistic talents to commenting on comic’s expression of violence and the popular images of American childhoods.

  18. How are the ideas of post modernism/ conceptualism be related to political cartooning?

  19. Each form of art attempts to address and comment on issues within our culture.

  20. Cartoon artists will often utilize popular images from our world to help communicate their message.

  21. Most political cartoons are created to be printed in documents such as Newspapers and magazines. As the Internet becomes a more modern source of our news, we can also find these visual comments online as well.

  22. Because political cartoons are traditionally created to be printed in mass media publications, they use cross hatching as a system of shading in order to get the best value out of a poor printing process.

  23. Political cartoons are valued in our culture because:*They are easy to read.*Provide quick commentary on political issues.*They are direct, subjective images that reveal hard truths.
