Noise Induced Hearing Loss Repeated unprotected exposure causes permanent damage to the hair cells in the ear This leads to hearing deficit at high frequencies If unprotected exposure continues this impairment will occur in lower frequencies and understanding normal speech will be difficult Tinnitus (continuous buzzing or ringing) may develop
Proposed New Regulations *EC Physical Agents Directive 2003/10/EC ; New UK legislation required (amended Noise at Work Regulations) for implementation Feb. 2006.
Employees’ Duties • Wear hearing protection provided. • Report faulty/damaged/lost hearing protection. • Maintain non-disposable hearing protection in a good state of repair. • Never re-use disposable plugs. • Where the type of protection is ear plugs, properly insert by holding between thumb and fingers, rolling and compressing before inserting into ear canal while pulling the ear outwards and upwards. • Report any hearing problems to your supervisor.
Controlling Noise • Engineering improvements – replace equipment with quieter alternatives, improvements such as acoustic hoods, enclosing work area, bafflers. • Restrict access to noisy work areas. • Hearing conservation programme – education, zones, signs, hearing protection and audiograms. • Positive safety culture – the norm is to wear hearing protection when required.
