How did we get here? Back in 2011, we had a community strategic planning meeting and the room was filled with optimistic, caring people who dared to ask, “What if?”
Imagine learning when it is best for you and your family • Fluid school day and school year. You’re not limited to 8am – 3pm or Sept – May. You design the school day and year that works for you. • School resources available whenever you need them.
Personalized Learning • Virtual Core Curriculum- personalized learning that addresses individualized needs • Built-in assessment that contains an e-portfolio. • Multi-age learning experience – students work together across age ranges and advance when they have achieved their goals.
Traditional school funding • In 2011 school funding was a challenge. State and Federal funding was declining in line with district enrollment. • The Stoughton community supported our schools, but no mechanism existed for the community to contribute directly to the schools.
Today’s community investment • All district stakeholders, from students and parents, to school staff and administrators, to community organizations and businesses, came together to develop a Stoughton Community Schools Foundation to invest in Stoughton’s future. • Now, our district has a source of funding outside of the political climate.

We know kids learn to read by reading, learn about cultures by immersion, contact and conversation, and problem solve by doing. It takes a village.
Do Students Interact? • In our district, our unique factor we have is how we have students teach students. • We feel it is beneficial to both the younger children and the older students to interact with each other and learn from one another. • This program helps create bonds between the variety of students.
How Does It Work? • Older students participate in teaching and interacting with the younger students. • Both make priority for it to be part of their schedule. • They are matched up with a student with a similar schedule.
Fostering 21st Century Global Citizenship through Collaboration Using state-of-the-art technology, students, teachers, and community members collaborate on local and global projects with schools and businesses across the globe.
How do we get to school? Shuttle service cooperatively with the public transportation system developed in 2014. It runs all day and it is used by all generations here in Stoughton. Young children hear stories from our senior citizens, bullying is reduced, and costs are shared with the community.
How can the village help? • People are collaborating, investing time and energy, knowledge and resources to reach a common goal. • One example is an intergenerational project which allows participants to plant and harvest food from gardens, and plan and prepare healthy meals with this food. These activities help them develop positive life long habits. • Other projects involve the arts, woodworking, storytelling, creative writing and mentoring.
