What is Assessment at Eastern? • “the process of gathering and reviewing information to improve student learning and to determine attainment of defined student learning outcomes.” • Faculty define specific learning outcomes for their courses (Master Course Record) • Determine to what degree the learning actually occurs (Classroom and Course level Assessment) • Incorporate assessment results for improvement of student learning (Program level Assessment, feedback loop, modification of courses and/or programs)

Course Level Assessment • Determine attainment of intended course level learning outcomes • Identify need for refinement of course materials and learning outcomes • Examine role of course in meeting program level learning outcomes • Assess multiple sections of same course
Eastern’s Emphasis on Course Level Assessment Based on HLC Accreditation visit: recommended that focus begin with course level assessment.
Getting Started • Select learning outcomes from the Master Course Record for assessment • Determine method of assessing learner outcomes, i.e. link exam questions to learning outcomes, use scoring rubric, use clinical or lab observation/tracking sheets. • Administer same assessment tool across multiple sections of course • Track student attainment of intended outcomes • Identify need for course and/or curriculum change • www.eastern.wv.net • Faculty and staff link • Internal Assessment link • Password protected: bluekey
Pilot for Fall 2012 • Master Course Record • Syllabus • Course Assessment Rotation Cycle (under revision) • Interested faculty should contact their Academic Program Director for details. • Selected faculty may be required to attend additional training sessions and pilot project evaluation session. • $300.00 per repot for each course level assessment approved by the Assessment Committee
