  2. The Question • Do History departments teach ICT? • What do they say they do? • They say they teach ICT • They say students will acquire skills • What do they actually do? • In departments where there are specialists they teach ICT • In departments where there aren’t specialists they don’t

  3. The Issue • In most cases ICT is taught by: • Non-historians • Generic central support units • Historical computing is taught by: • Some specialised departments • External courses (e.g. AHDS) • Isolated exercises such as web evaluation exercises and the like

  4. The Problem • Not really taught outside of specialist centres • Staff often don’t have the skills themselves • Staff don’t know about advanced techniques • The expertise is rarely available locally and is unlikely to become so

  5. The Response • The AHC suggested publishing a ‘methods’ textbook to try to plug the skills gap • The National Archives expressed an interest as did the History Subject Centre • The IHR offered to host an electronic version and help with publishing an on demand print version
