Elizabeth Harding UNICEF Project
The girl and her bike • She was 12 years old • She lives in Ghana • She goes and gets two buckets of water twice a day • She has to walk for half an hour to get water • Its a 4km walk for her to get water • UNICEF got her a bike so she can get water, and then travel to school.
The bike • The bike was new to Amatu • We may take a bike for granted and use it to have fun. • But this one changed the girls life • The bikes are only for girls, not boys • If the bike gets broken Amatu has to take it to a bike repair stall in the local town. • Amatu is happy with her bike • The bike was a gift from UNICEF • She can keep the bike until she leaves school • Amatu needs the bike because she does a lot of work at home and she also needs to go to school
Who would have thought! • That a bike could be connected to fresh water. • If her brothers try and use her bike everybody stops them. She keeps it locked in her room. • UNICEF Ghana worked to raise $50 or £28 for each bike. Girls may get one if they live more than 6km from their secondary school.
