  3. Introduction: • What is phrasal verbs? • Phrasal verbs are idiomatic expressions, combining verbs and prepositions to make new verbs whose meaning is often not obvious from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. They are widely used in both written and spoken English.

  4. Examples of phrasal verbs… • 1- grow + up “ The children are growing up”. • ـــOften this gives the verb a new meaning: • 2- take + after “ She takes after her mother”.It means, She cares about her mother , helps, and comfortable her. • 3-count + on “ I know I can count on you” It means I know I can trust you, or I know I can believe you.

  6. Phrasal verbsin informal speech • Phrasal verbs are usually used informally in everyday speech as opposed to the more formal Latinate verbs, such as • “to get together” rather than “to congregate”, • “to put off” rather than “to postpone”, • “to get out” rather than “to exit”.

  7. Literal usage: Verbs can be combined with an adverb or a preposition, and readers or listeners will easily understand a phrasal verb used in a literal sense with a preposition: • e.g : • "He walked across the square.“ • "She opened the shutters and looked outside.“ • "When he heard the crash, he looked up."

  8. Idiomatic usage • the figurative or idiomatic application in everyday speech which makes phrasal verbs so important: • "I hope you will get over your operation quickly." • "Work hard, and get your examination over with." • Many people argue the computer does all the work for the students, not allowing them the opportunity to digest what they have learned.
