Today’s Agenda • Already Ready Book Study -Nurturing Writers in Preschool (Building and Understanding and Teaching Practices that support it) • Review of CCSS writing and listening/speaking standards • Writing in Science- research and inquiry • Creating science lessons aligned to CCSS
Overview of the Book • Collection of fundamental understandings about the writing development of young children • Teaching practices that nurture young writers (read aloud, side by side teaching, and share time) • Meet the Author and Illustrator (3 and 4 year old student samples) • Examining both the thinking and the writing (artifacts) in depth.
Relating it to CCSS Writing • Text Types and Purposes • Production and Distribution • Research to Build and Present Knowledge • Range of Writing • Responding to Literature
Standards Focus (Writing) • With prompting and support, use a combination of drawing, dictating or writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about to supply some information about the topic. • Participate in shared research and writing projects. • With guidance and support, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Relating it to CCSS Listening and Speaking • Comprehension and Collaboration • Presentation and Knowledge of Ideas
Standards Focus (LS) With guidance and support, ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.
So what Can this look like for Pre-K? • Project like writing (children’s book making) Independently read the introduction – Xiii-XVIII Why book making in Pre-K?
So if becoming thoughtful about process, composition, craft, and more is a good educational goal for any writer, then why not these writers? Pg. 13
What makes preschool classrooms distinct are the decisions adults are making about what experiences children should be having.
7 Intellectual Dispositions Where children’s experiences lead to : • Problem solving and reasoning • Questioning and problem posing • Keen observations- gathering data through all senses • Imagining, innovating, and responding with wonderment and awe • Intellectual risk-taking • Thinking interdependently • Persistence
Preschool Projects • Ex. Buying and installing an ornamental pond at the school so their tadpoles could grow into frogs. • Share with your table a Prek project that encourages the use of literacy skills (reading, writing, drawing, listening, speaking).
Apply the 7 Intellectual Dispositions How did each preschool author’s book making involve the dispositions? • Group 1- Meet Isabella pg. 37-38 • Group 2- Meet Regan pg. 55-56 • Group 3- Meet Alexis pg. 85-86 • Group 4- Meet Nick pg. 103-104 • Group 5- Meet Lily pg. 123-124 • Group 6- Meet Nicholas pg. 147-148
Inquiry • Balloon Science • Making Glue • Gravity • Straw Science • Bubbles • Science in a bag • The Five Senses of Spring (summer, fall, winter, etc) • Nature Hunt Vocabulary • Dirt Experts • Worm Hotels
Worm Hotel • How can I align the worm hotel to the common core writing, listening and/or speaking standards. • Groups of 3 – Come up with one idea You will collect 4 different ideas for literacy and science integration
Science and Literacy Integration Explore Pre-K science by rotating through the different experiments/tasks. Align each activity to a common core writing and/or listening and speaking standard(s). - What can this look like in Pre-K? - Chart your ideas
Science Rotations • Balloons • Bubbles • Straws and clay • Science in a bag (pennies) • Gravity
Commercial Breaks In 3-5 minutes share a science idea that we have not shared today. OR Share a resource that you often use.
Closing • Please complete the evaluation for the Pre-K CLC (4 sessions) • Please include any questions you still have along with your email address for a contact. THANK YOU FOR PARTICPATING IN OUR PREK CLC!
