Monomer Polymer
Glue is made of polymer strands called polyvinyl acetate. Because the polymers are so long, they get somewhat tangled causing glue to be viscous. Adding water to glue helps lubricate the strands so the strands can slowly flow past one another.
Borax, also known as sodium tetraborate is a crosslinking agent known as a connector.
Cross-linking can be compared to the connection of wooden ties holding the rails of a railroad track in place.
Mono: Meaning one The borate ions in borax connect the monomers of different chains in the glue in a cross-linking fashion.
The borate ions create cross-links throughout the entire sample, creating a 3-D like web of polyvinyl acetate and Borax. The new compound is neither polyvinyl acetate, nor borax; it called a Cross-Linked polymer. Cross-Linked Polymer
The compound feels wet and gooey because water molecules get caught in the spaces between the polyvinyl acetate and connectors.
The end result is a gooey material we call Gluep. Too much water and it is slimy. Too little water and it becomes brittle. Just the right amount of water and it is bouncy. You must experiment to make it the way you want it. Go to the following website and look around at the information on polymers. http://www.pslc.ws/macrog/kidsmac/kfloor2.htm
