Global Drivers In the short term, both thermal and metallurgical coal imports in China are forecast to increase – as China’s rapid economic growth – and consequently coal consumption – exceeds the capacity of domestic production. India’s power ministry has plans to develop five “ultra-mega” coal fired power plants – with a capacity of 4000 megawatts – which would each require around 20 million tonnes of coal a year. At least three of these plants are intended to operate on imported coal. The “ultra-mega” projects are intended to be developed by 2012, although a range of new coal projects in the interim will boost demand for imported coal.
