SESSION CODE: MGT308 Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager v.Next: Overview Jeff Wettlaufer Sr. Technical Product Manager System Center B http://blogs.technet.com/systemcenterT jeffwettlaufer E http://edge.technet.com/Tags/System+Center/
Configuration Manager v.Next User Centric Client Management EMPOWER UNIFY CONTROL • Enables IT to provide a flexible work environment • Users can connect from anywhere, on any device they choose • Automatically detects network conditions and device configurations to determine the most appropriate services • Simplifies and consolidates the IT infrastructure to provide a new operational cost model • Integrates security to create unified client management • New features around administrative control to reduce infrastructure • Reduces the complexity and improves visibility into systems compliance • Keeps assets available and helps keep the IT environment audit-ready • Simplifies and automates patch management
Embracing User-Centric: The End-User of the Future • Tomorrow's End-User is FAR More Tech Savvy Than Today’s • “Digital Natives” have never known life without ubiquitous technology • Consumerization of IT more prevalent • How and Where Users Work Will Change • IDC – 1 billion mobile workers by 2011 • Breakdown • 75% of American workforce mobile by 2011 • 80% of Japanese workforce mobile by 2011 • Tomorrow’s IT Pro is in the Crosshairs • Demand for IT specialists will shrink 40% by 2010 • Increased balance of versatilists
System and User-Centric Configuration Manager 2007: • Optimized for Systems Management scenarios • Challenging to manage users: • Forced to translate a user to a device • Explicit: run a specific program on a specific device • Software Distribution is a glorified script execution. • Configuration Manager v.Next: • Still committed and focused on System Management scenarios • Embrace User Centric scenarios: • Tell the difference between a user’s desktop and a kiosk • Flexible solution so IT can maintain control, and users can be productive anywhere and anytime. • Management solution tailored for applications
Embracing User Centric: Administrator Promises • Let the administrator think user first • ConfigMgr maintains relationship between users and systems to solve core user targetin • Only install software if user is primary user on that device • Pre-deploy to users’ primary devices for WoL, off-hrs, workgroup, etc • App management model captures admin intent • Manage apps, not scripts • State-based – re-evaluated for presence, and if gone can be reinstalled • Requirement rules – evaluated at install time to ensure the app only installs in places it can, and should. • Dependencies – Relationships with other apps that are all evaluated prior to installing anything.
Embracing User Centric: End-User Promises • “A Fitting End-User Experience” • Web based software catalog • Easily find and request software • Choose software intelligently thanks to clear, consistent and concise information about applications and their impact • “The ability to define their relationships to their software” • User preferences control ConfigMgr behaviors (e.g. “my business hours”) • Manage impact from software installation and system restarts
Administrator Experience • Common look and feel across System Center products • Improve discoverability • Only show what is relevant • Complete scenarios within the console • Simplified navigation • Consolidated elements
Role-Based Administration • Simplified administration of security permissions • Security Role • Group sets of permissions together that collectively define an administrative span of control • e.g. Read Program + Deploy Program + Read Collection + Advertise to Collection = Software Distribution Administrator • Supports assignment of Security Roles to Users, once in a hierarchy • Also supports instance level controls • ConfigMgr provides out-of-the-box Security Roles • Supports custom Security Roles • Removes clutter from the console • Supports “Show me what’s relevant to me” based on my Security Role and Scope
Role-Based Administration Example • Jamie as ‘ConfigMgr Admin’ has full rights • Jamie assigns Application Deployment role to Bruce Jamie as ‘ConfigMgr Admin’ has rights to, and can see: Bruce is responsible for deploying software ConfigMgr Admin Jamie Bruce has rights to, and can a see:.
Infrastructure Changes: Modernizing our architecture • ConfigMgr 2007 scenarios where a unique primary site may be needed: • Create tiered primary sites so content distribution and client inventory and status wouldn’t kill my WAN • Create separate primary sites (or hierarchies!) because different server and desktop client agent settings are needed • Create a primary site so individual admins only see the data they need to see • ConfigMgr v.Next will allow admin’s to minimize and consolidate ConfigMgr 2007 infrastructure • Primaries are needed for scale out only • Options for content distribution: Secondaries, DPs with throttling/scheduling, BranchCache, Branch DP • Client agent settings configurable by collection • Data Segmentation via Role Based Access Control
Infrastructure Changes: Modernizing our architecture • Improved Distribution Point Groups • Manage content distribution to individual Distribution Points or Groups • Content automatically added or removed from Distribution Points based on Group membership • Associate Distribution Point Groups with a collections to automate content staging for software targeted to the collection • Enhanced investment in SQL technologies • New replication methods for site to site communications • Only supporting SQL Server Reporting Services
Client Health • Server-side metrics covering policy requests, HW & SW Inventory, Heartbeat DDRs and Status Messages • Customizable monitoring/remediation for: • Client prerequisites • ConfigMgr client reinstallation • Dependent Windows Services • WMI Repository, Namespace, Class, and Instance health evaluation and repair • In-console alerts when healthy/unhealthy ratio drops below configurable threshold
Mobile Device Management • Extend and align mobile device management • Integration of System Center Mobile Device Manager and ConfigMgr 2007 features • Common administration for mobile devices, desktops, and servers • Introduction of cross-platform mobile device support • Enable user-centric mobile device management • Deploy applications and configuration policies to users or devices • Enable secure, compliant mobile devices • Secure over-the-air enrollment • Monitor and remediate out-of-compliance devices • Application allow/deny and configuration policies
Software Updates • State-based Update Groups • Deploy updates individually or in groups • Updates added to an update group automatically deploy to collections targeted with the group • Auto Deployment Rules • Use search criteria to identify class of updates to automatically deploy: category, products, language, date revised, article id, bulletin id, etc. • Schedule content download and deployment based on sync schedule or define a separate schedule per rule
Update Auto Approval DEMO
Operating System Deployment • Offline Servicing of Images • Support for Component Based Servicing compatible updates • Uses updates already approved • Boot Media Updates • Hierarchy wide boot media – no longer need one per site • Unattended boot media mode – no longer need to press “next” • Use pre-execution hooks to automatically select a task sequence – no longer see many optional task sequences • USMT 4.0 - UI integration and support for hard-link, offline and shadow copy features
Remote Control • Send Ctrl-Alt-Del to host device to regain previous feature parity IS BACK!
Settings Management • ConfigMgr 2007 could report all your setting drift – ConfigMgr v.Next can “set” for Registry, WMI and Script-Based • Improved usability in CI and baseline creation to include: • Re-use of settings across CI boundary • Define compliance SLAs for Baselines to trigger console alerts • Improved reporting to include troubleshooting, conflict, remediation • Unified settings management across servers, desktops and mobile devices • Improved CI versioning and audit tracking • Control CI versions to be used in baselines • Audit tracking, who changed what
