  5. The Growth of Towns • Towns began to grow as a result of: • Increasing population • Decreasing barbarian invasions • Spread of new goods • Post-crusade culture shift

  7. Medieval Guilds • Creation of Guilds. • Trade groups, similar to unions • Controlled membership • apprentice journeyman  master craftsman • Controlled quality of the product [masterpiece]. • Controlled prices of the goods

  9. New classes develop • Bourgeoisies, class of created wealth

  10. Downside of cities and towns: • Many people living close together • Poor living conditions • Unclean water, poor sanitation • Spread of disease

  11. The Black Death • Cities and trade facilitate the spread of the plague, or black death • Disease spread by fleas on rats. • No understanding of the disease

  12. Demographic Impact • 237 - 300 Million Dead? • 1/3 of the Total Population dead due to the plague • In some areas of Europe ½ the population • Empty villages • Hardest hit: China up to 35 million dead
