It’s about building relationships • Get to know your students • What sports do they play? • What are they involved in outside of school? • Be sincere • You can’t fake sincerity • Don’t lower expectations • Kids respect that you expect more from them
It’s about being a salesperson • Talk up your program all the time • At the school open house pitch the whole program not just the class • Hand out brochures • You need to “sell it” to the kids • Especially right before course registration • You need to “sell it” to the parents • You need to “sell it” to guidance • A business programs best friends
It’s about a great program • Create courses to attract a wider demographic (offer to teach every other year to get course approval) • College courses to attract “AP” students • Leadership to attract college bound students • Fashion Marketing/Advertising to attract a larger female population • Intro to Business to attract 9th graders into the program
It’s about trips • People’s Court • Sports Stadium (MSG, Nassau Coliseum) • Montel Williams • Club Getaway – Connecticut • BOCES – Project Adventure low/high ropes challenge courses • Rafting/Zip-lining • Court House • Adelphi Business Conference for HS Students • Hofstra Finance Program • Year-end professional dinner at Local Steakhouse
It’s about business opportunities • Career Day Fair • Let the students run the school store • Guest Lecturers • Contestant from the Apprentice Program – Chris Russo – Along with News12 • Lawyers/Judges/Police • Entrepreneurs
It’s about money • Create a scholarship • We sell smart water and use the profit to give away $500 to a graduating business student • Create a competition to win scholarships and trips • We give away over $2500 (in scholarships and trips) yearly during our Apprentice Competition
