Principe FAMILY HISTORY • The Serbian surname of PRINCIPE was a nickname 'one with the appearance of a prince - one who played the part in a pageant or play'. The name was originally in the Latin form of PRIMUS, meaning 'first', presumably denoting someone who behaved in a regal manner or had won the title in some contest of skill. During the Middle Ages, when people were unable to read or write, signs were needed for all visual identification. For several centuries city streets were filled with signs of all kinds, public houses, tradesmen and even private householders found them necessary. • Coats of arms accompanied the development of surnames, becoming hereditary in the same way. The name is also spelt PRINCIP, PRINS, LE PRINCE, PRINZ, DEL PRINCIPE, PRINCIPE and PRINCIPI. An infamous member of the name was Gavrilo PRINCIP (1895-1918) the Serbian nationalist and revolutionary, born in Bosnia. He was a member of a secret Serbian terrorist organization known as the 'Black Hand' dedicated to the achievement of independence for the South Slav peoples from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. • On June 28th, 1914, he and a group of young zealots assassinated the archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie on a visit to Sarajevo. The murder precipitated World War I. after Austria declared war on Serbia on 28th July. Princip died in an Austrian prison.
