  2. What Exactly is a Ghetto? Made up of 3 different types: Open, Closed, and Destruction. Closed Ghetto had the highest mortality rate. Theresienstadt (Model Ghetto)- A fortress taken over by the Gestapo and converted into a labor camp. A market in Warsaw ghettos. http://ghetto.galim.org.il/eng/crowded/photo2.html

Theresienstadt : A Documentary • Created as a propaganda documentary. • Directed by Kurt Gerron, a Jewish prisoner. • Originally entitled “Terezin: A Documentary Film of the Jewish Resettlement”. • Edited by the Gestapo and renamed to “The Fuhrer Gives village to the Jews”. • After it’s release, Gerron and anyone who appeared in the film was deported to Auschwitz.

  4. How the Ghettos Emerged • Established in 1939, but the concept of separating a community is much older. • Purpose was to separate the Jewish from the non-Jewish population. • Many Ghettos were set up during the war. Warsaw Ghetto in 1940 http://www.warsaw-life.com/poland/warsaw-ghetto
