Gerunds and Infinites. What is different between these two sentences. . I use my car to get to work. I use my car for getting to work. Is the meaning different?. Infinitives and Gerunds. To + verb = Infinitive (to drive, to sing, etc.) I use my microwave to cook hot dogs.

  3. Infinitives and Gerunds • To + verb = Infinitive (to drive, to sing, etc.) • I use my microwave to cook hot dogs. • For+ Verb + ing = Gerund (driving, singing, etc.) • I use my book as a pillow for sleeping in Mr. Price’s class.

Rules • Use infinitives or gerunds when talking about the purpose of something. • I use my computer to study every night. • I use my computer for studying every night. • Use gerunds for objects when talking about purpose, not for people. • I went to the gun store for buying a gun. • I went to the gun store to buy a gun.
