AESO Business Priorities and Business Plan Development Process Process Overview Wayne St. Amour VP Corporate Services Budget Review Committee August 28, 2007
Why Process Has Been Developed • To strike a balance with projects, activities and resources since work requests exceed the organization capacity for implementation. • Limited availability of resources - human and funds. • Need to select work and projects that are best aligned with corporate strategies (best value).
Balancing Factors • Requirement to balance the factors that influence the evaluation and selection process. Some factors are: • Legislated mandate • Availability of funds • Availability of people • Organization readiness for change • Organization maturity
Process Steps • Used an iterative approach to process definition, selection and evaluation criteria. • Developed templates to gather initial data. • Identified 3 groups of Business Priorities • Group 1: Carry over from 2007 • Group 2: Mandated Business Priorities • Group 3: Discretionary Business Priorities • Identified 2-tier evaluation and selection drivers for discretionary Business Priorities: • Tier 1: Direct contribution to AESO Strategies • Tier 2: Contribution to Business Benefits
Process Objectives • Coordinate all Business Priorities through a common enterprise-wide process • Align Business Priorities with AESO strategies and plans • Align prioritization process with AESO financial and Business Planning processes • Ensure Transparency of process, decision making and results
Process Overview • Iterative, highly participative with business units throughout AESO • Support to participants at the front end to ensure submissions consistency and quality • Transparent criteria • Linked with AESO financial processes • Linked with industry best practices Project Lifecycle stages
