PH Scale • The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. It ranges from 0 to 14, when the ph is 7 its neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic when on the other hand the pH greater than 7 is basic.
Acid • Acids have a low PH. • They can taste sour. • Acids can be corrosive. • Acids makes hydrogen and carbon dioxide. • Acids can be used in food for faster digestion. Types of acids: • Hydrochloric acid • Nitric acid • Sulphuric acid • Citric acid
Base (Alkali) • Alkalis have a PH of over 7 so pH paper goes blue/purple. • Alkalis often feel soapy. • They can be corrosive • It neutralize acids to make salts. Types of bases: • Sodium Hydroxide • Calcium Carbonate • Calcium Hydroxide • Ammonia Solution
Universal Indicator • It is a substance used to determine the strengths of acids and alkalis. Universal indicator is used to measure the pH (1-14) of a solution. When you add the indicator to your solution it will change color according to the pH. Bright colors mean an acidic pH and dark colors mean a basic pH.
Tooth Decay • Many different types of food can cause tooth decay in children, not just candy. Foods that are high in carbohydrates, as well as some fruits, juices and sodas, peanut butter, crackers and potato chips are culprits. Factors that cause tooth decay include the frequency in which the foods are eaten and the time they remain as particles in the mouth.
