Why the advantage? • People are more likely to have heard of an incumbent. • Why? • Free mailings – what is that called? • They can travel frequently to meet constituents. • They can get their names in newspapers by supporting legislation. • Greater access to the media.
WHY DO WE HAVE THESE HIGH PERCENTAGES OF INCUMBENTS BEING RE-ELECTED?
Problems that Incumbents may face 1.) Some may take re-election for granted. 2.) Scandals or corruption. 3.) Some may be redistricted out of their own districts – another party or rival faction may want to remove a member of Congress. They may be forced out of familiar territory and make them vulnerable.
Marginal and Safe Districts What is the difference? Marginal Districts political districts in which candidates elected to the House of Representatives win in close elections, typically by less than 55% of the vote. Safe Districts districts where incumbents win by margins of 55% or more.
