What I did this summerBy: Scott GriffinBay City High School IPC/BiologyJune 2008 • Researched the “Flooding” phenomenon that occurs during countercurrent flow • Mentor: Dr. Karen Vierow • Dr. Isaac Choutapalli • Graduate genius: Nikki Williams
Every last detail matters The goal of engineering is to keep the public safe and never have another accident like these.
How our research project was born • NRC contacted Dr. Vierow; Can the tubes in the steam generator rupture during a LOCA? • Research gave them usable data; Dr. Vierow asked a question, What are the events in the surge line of the pressurizer during a LOCA? • DOE funded research to ascertain the conditions under which flooding occurs during countercurrent flow.
A fuel pellet this size has the power of about a ton of coal
What I can do with this experience • Countercurrent flow in weather, Sea Breeze, tornado • In water currents, Ocean currents, Tidal surge • Work Power & Energy, Systems, Energy Transformation, Heat transfer • Chemistry, Nuclear, Fusion, Fission, Decay, Half-life, Boron, Zirconium • Biology, Countercurrent flow, environmental, Cancer, Circulatory system
