  6. Group Work! • Each group will receive a packet to read and analyze • After reading, each group will use color markers to create a diagram to represent assigned characteristic of living things. • Each group at the end will present to the class the main ideas

  7. LG: What Makes Living Things Living? First Characteristic of Living Things • All living things are made of one or more cells. • What is a CELL? A cell is the smallest unit that carries on the functions of life.

  8. Unicellular vs. Multicellular • Uni-: single Ex: paramecium, amoeba, some yeasts • Multi-: many (more than one) Ex: plants, human

  10. LG: What Makes Living Things Living? Third Characteristic of Living Things • All living things use energy. Plants however use the sunlight to obtain their energy. Animals and humans eat food to obtain their energy.

  11. LG: What Makes Living Things Living? Third Characteristic of Living Things • All living things can obtain and use energy to carry out life processes. • Ex: digest food, exercise, move around… • Metabolism: chemical reactions occur in our body to convert nutrients to ENERGY

  12. Fourth Characteristic of Living Things • All living things must maintain homeostasis. • Homeostasis: internal stability • Ex: maintain constant temperature when outside is hot or cold Normal AVERAGE body temperature: 98.6ºF

  13. Fifth Characteristic of Living Things • All living things are able to pass on their characteristics from parents to their offspring through genes.

  14. Sixth characteristic of living things • All living things can evolve.

  15. Seventh characteristic of living things • All living things can interact with each other in a community. They all depend on each other for survival.
