  2. In this type of government, power is held by the people using a free electoral system. The people rule by electing others to represent them in government. Democracy

  4. A system by which a nation is ruled by a king or queen. Power is passed down through the ruling family. • Note: some countries today have a constitutional monarchy, where there is a king or queen but he/she shares the power with an elected government Monarchy

  5. Monarchy: • Oman • Qatar • Saudi Arabia • Brunei • Constitutional Monarchy: • United Kingdom • Japan • Spain • United Arab Emirates • Jordan Examples of Monarchy

  6. The nation is ruled by one political party. People are typically forced to do what the government tells them to do. • Note: many of today’s totalitarian governments are communist. (Society that tries to make everything completely equal – jobs, money, power. In practice, the communist party usually controls everything.) Totalitarianism

  8. A form of government controlled by people who base the nation’s laws on religious ideas. Sometimes, the rulers are said to act as agents for a particular deity(god). Theocracy

  10. A system under which a single, unelected leader uses force or coercion to keep control. In a military dictatorship, the army is in control of the nation. • Typically, little attention is paid to individuals, personal freedoms, or public opinion. Dictatorship

  12. A chaotic situation where there is no government. This can happen after a revolution or civil war, usually because the previous government failed and rival groups are trying to replace it. Anarchy
