Local vs. National Local organizations model presents an increased liability to college campuses Local groups who still exist at the College function in the same way as National organizations National Organizations provide resources, money, leadership programming, advisory boards and national involvement opportunities
Timeline • 2009-10 Outside National consultant team visited campus to evaluate Greek Life they reported a dismal Community at McDaniel • 2009-10 Mandate to Underground Groups get legitimate or leave • Fall 2010 • Director of Student Engagement hired with an extensive Greek background • Evaluation of Greek Community • New Member Anti-Hazing Education begins • Spring 2011 • New Recruitment and Programming model introduced • Interfraternity Counciland PanhellenicAssociation redefined • Panhellenic Judicial Board created
Timeline Fall 2011 • Alpha Nu Omega (Local) becomes Alpha Sigma Tau (National) • Alcohol education and new fall recruitment models introduced • Fraternity expansion policy written and adopted by chapters • Chapters attend National Officer Academies Spring 2012 • Chapter accreditation program introduced • Expansion agreements reached with three multicultural Greek-lettered organizations • OrgSynclaunched • Chapters submitted budgets/financial plans • Fall 2012 • Chapter accreditation program second phase launched with Chapters
Fraternity and Sorority Life Now • 15% of current undergraduate students are Greek • Current Greek-lettered organizations on campus • PanhellenicAssociation • Alpha Sigma Tau (Alpha Nu Omega), 2012, 45 members • Phi Mu, 1989, 50 members • Phi Alpha Mu, re-started 2009, 20 members • Phi Sigma Sigma, 1988, 45 members • InterfraternityCouncil • Alpha Sigma Phi, 2001, 40 members • Alpha Gamma Tau (The Bachelors), 1924, 7 members • Phi Delta Theta, 1970, 22 members • Phi Kappa Sigma, 1999, 28 members
Fraternity and Sorority Life Now • College demographics have changed • Culturally-based Greek organizations • Expansion Agreements were reached for the 2012-13 academic year with: • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (historically African-American) • Alpha Theta Gamma Multicultural Sorority, Inc. • Omega Phi Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.
Chapter Accreditation Program • Program fully implemented in Spring 2013, and requires a minimum 85% score to maintain recognition with campus • Chapters will be rewarded by the College for achieving minimum scores • Across the country standards programs are used to help Greek Communities publicize their good work and accomplishments.

Scholarship • Minimum GPA raised to 2.5 • VP Scholarship positions created on both governing councils (IFC and Panhellenic) • New member education program accountability • Academic planning required
Community Building and Leadership Chapter President monthly meetings with OSE Spring Greek Leadership Conference Community service projects via Org Sync All Chapters have over 60% membership in other student organizations 6/8 Chapters average 5 service hours per member, each month Over 1,000 service hours per month!
Programming • Greek 101 Education Initiative • Programs occur monthly, and all 8 chapters have met the minimum 80% required attendance • Alcohol and Risk Management • All chapters are now in good standing with insurance • College offers community-wide alcohol education programs • Social Event policy and registration system implemented to match National requirements
Hazing • Late 1990’s hazing laws changed due to numerous student deaths and catastrophic injuries • How McDaniel addresses Hazing: • Hazing Hotline Introduced • Anonymous hotline where students can report hazing • Anti-Hazing Programming • National speakers and programs • Building unity in chapters without hazing • National Hazing Prevention Week • Non-Hazing Compliance Form
Organizational Management • 7/8 Chapters have active alumni advisors • 8/8 Chapters submitted a FY13 budget and plan for usage • 4/8 Chapters examined FY13 dues and increased fees • National Headquarters consultant visits now occurring • Restarting of Order of Omega (Greek Leadership Honor Society)
Next Steps • Creation of Relationship Statement • PR Campaign focused on Greek alumni to “get the word out” • Assessing needs of underrepresented student population • Examine expansion plan • Increase chapter participation in Greek Housing • Increase involvement of alumni in chapter operations
