I'm a sixth-former and my school library doesn't have the resources I need for my EPQ. What can I do? • The internet is my only option. • Go to the public library. • I can borrow books from my nearest university's library. • I can register as a reference user at my nearest university's library. 0 of 0
How can I register at a university library? • I will have to go with a teacher from my school. • I will need advance permission from the university library. • I will need photo ID and some proof that I attend my school. • I can just ask at the university library's reception.
So how do I find books at the university library? • I can search the online catalogue in advance. • I can search the online catalogue when I'm at the library. • Library staff will have to show me to the books. • I have to request books in advance.
I've searched the library catalogue and one really useful item is on microfilm. What is that? • A short film. • Text that has been condensed and put in an online film database. • A storage system for old photos and negatives. • Text that has been condensed and put on a roll of film.
Now I've got something on microfiche. What's that? • The same as microfilm but put onto cards. • The same as microfilm but converted into digital form. • Like microfilm but for pictures: they're put into individual photos. • Pictures but put in an online database.
I've been advised to visit an archive for my EPQ research. What will I find there? • Any kind of document over 100 years old. • Any kind of document over 30 years old. • Old and rare manuscripts. • Official documents and rare publications.
And how do I get the materials I need from the archive? • I have to request the specific materials in advance. • Same as in the library: find the classmark in the catalogue and then look for it on the shelves. • I have to request specific material or a general range of material in advance. • I will be escorted to the strong room to find my material on the shelves.
I've just started university and have got my reading lists, but I don't know how to use the library. What do I do? • Go to the library and work it out! • Ask library staff for help. • Avoid the library and use Google instead. • Register for a library induction session.
The book I need is out on loan. What do I do? • Keep checking the catalogue until it is returned. • Request a hold on the book. • Ask the library to order another copy. • Turn to Google Books.
I've got freshers' flu and can't get to the library. How can I get my reading done? • Send a friend. • Request the library to post me the books. • Use the e-resources. • Just go back to sleep.
