“Lost Friendship”

2. Definitions • True friendship requires… trust, unconditional support, loyalty, honesty, patience, understanding, acceptance, and interpersonal connections.

3. Friendship in Lost Generation • Shallow and superficial friendship emerges among the characters in the novel • Jake, Robert, Brett, and Bill’s friendships are formed through secular activities, such as drinking and partying. • The sole factor which connects these expatriates together is their impotence

4. Jake and Robert • They have distinct ideas about the meaning of life  Jake does not believe in adventures or romanticism while Robert constantly seeks excitement and escape from the real world • Their friendship is hindered by their common interest in Brett. She engenders jealousy and bitterness between Jake and Robert  This shows that their friendship was weak and unstable to begin with.

5. Jake and Brett • Brett is always disloyal to Jake. She uses Jake as a backup man that she could lean on when she feels lonely. • However, Jake always accepts her and waits for her. His feelings for her are genuine, but Brett constantly rejects them. • Their friendship is secretive and superficial. They hide their feelings in front of others

6. Jake and Bill • Their friendship is the most casual relationship in the novel • Jake and Bill’s friendship is superficial because they fail to accept and understand each other’s weakness (impotence) • They are able to bond through masculine activities through fishing and bullfighting.

7. Conclusion • In The Sun Also Rises, all the characters fail to form deep friendship because they are preoccupied with their personal issues. • Hemingway emphasizes the friendship between men. Females (ex. Brett) are illustrated as hindrance in their friendship. • Lost Generation can be represented by their “Lost Friendship”
