  1. Donate Blood & Make a Difference!

  2. Despite growing blood donations, India is facing a blood shortage of 3 million units. According to health experts, if an additional 2 percent of Indians donated blood, this problem can be addressed. According to a WHO report, while the need for blood donation in India is 12 million units, only nine million units are collected annually.

  3. Donated blood is usually separated out into four individual components- red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets & plasma. These components can be put to different uses.

  4. Red blood cells- Red blood cells are used to treat severe anaemia when the bone marrow stops producing enough red cells such as in thalassemia, leukaemia and chemotherapy. They are also used to replace heavy blood loss like during childbirth, surgery, trauma, etc. • White blood cells- White blood cells work as a part of the body’s defence system as they fight body infections. White blood cells can help patients suffering from deadly infections whose defence mechanisms stop responding to antibiotics.

  5. Platelets- Platelets are small fragment of cells that help blood to clot. Anyone who has a very low platelet level may suffer a lot from bleeding and bruising. Platelet transfusions are used for patients, who are undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia or cancer, bone marrow or organ transplantation, suffering with life-threatening blood disorders or who have severe bleeding due to surgery or trauma.

  6. Plasma- Plasma is a yellow coloured fluid in the blood that carried all blood cells. Plasma is processed to extract other components like albumin and clotting factors. Albumin is a protein that is used for anyone who has lost large amount of blood or anyone who’s been severely burned or shocked. Factor VIII is one of the major components of plasma that can be used for anyone whose blood doesn’t clot properly.

  7. Every time a person donates blood, it goes through mandatory screening tests to provide safe blood supply to the patients. Blood is tested for potential infections that can be passed from donor to patient via transfusion. Donated blood is usually tested for infections such as Syphilis, Hepatitis B/ Hepatitis C, HIV, Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV). There are some additional tests that are not performed on every donation but in individual circumstances. These extra tests include Malaria, West Nile Virus, Cytomegalovirus and T.cruzi.

  8. So Donate Blood and bring smile to one’s life.. This year theme is CelebratingthegiftofBlood
