  1. S.L. Jones Christian Academy Inc. Vision The vision of Pastor and Mrs. Willie W. Demps was to develop a Holistic Ministry at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. S. L. Jones Christian Academy, Inc. was established in July 2000 and incorporated May 23, 2002 as an independent private Christian School S. L. Jones Christian Academy is a spiritual ministry with a goal of outreach evangelism.

  3. Humble Beginnings Started with 32 children in Sunday School classrooms at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church Started out K-5th and grew a grade each year Moved to Two Locations before our current home Moved to 100 Boeing St in 2009 Purchased school with 10 acres in 2014

Our goal is to develop students with strong Christian character, cultivate productive citizens, provide applicable life skills and graduate a well rounded student prepared for college and will be a benefit to our community and nation.”

  6. SCHOOL MAKE-UP Most of our students come from a disadvantaged socio-economic background. All of our students are on three types of scholarships John McKay (scholarship for students with a range of learning disabilities) 37 Students Step-Up-For Students (scholarship for students with low income) 125 students scholarship VPK enrollment 12 students paid 6 unpaid Triple A enrollment 92 students (pending scholarships) International Program 4 active students *add to Triple A

  7. SCHOOL MAKE-UP Currently our enrollment is 272 students Only 6 out of those 272 students do not come from socio-economic disadvantaged backgrounds. We have 151 Male and 121 Female students We have 232 Black, 3 Hispanic, 19 Multi Ethnic, 18 white students.

  8. Analyzing our Data Analyzing our data is key to coming up with plans to make progress. Some of the key areas we wanted to address that we know effect our students academic progress are the following: Student Engagement Attendance Assessing Academic Progress School Environment (safety)

Steps to Improve Student Learning Engagement was a key issue that we felt we needed to make progress in Without proper student learning engagement discipline infractions rise, students have poor grades, and it creates an unhealthy culture. While there are many socio-economic factors that can play a role in student learning engagement we know that some of those we cannot affect. Areas we do feel like we can affect are better preparing our teachers, communicating to parents, and more counseling for students

  10. FINDINGS FROM OUR DATA Report card grades were high but Assessment Tests were low. K-3rd grade tested well, 4th and 9th were slightly below grade level. All other grades were severely low. Previously we used the Stanford 10, and then moved to the Iowa 9 assessment tests, which only scored students at the end of the year. We saw poor academic results but at the end of the year there is little that can be done.

  11. FINDINGS FROM OUR DATA Many students were achieving high grades in the classrooms but these levels of achievements were not translating to our assessment tests. We then noticed data the showed that student achievement drastically changed at certain grade levels

FINDINGS FROM OUR DATA K- 4th grade classes achieved in the classroom and on assessment tests. 5th grade saw around 50% on grade level and 50% below grade level 6th-12th grade saw very poor scores, except 9th grade which was only slightly below grade level. We noticed a trend that many of the students who were once engaged, and high achieving in elementary, fell below grade level in middle school.

  13. PLAN OF ACTION Our plan of action led us to a stronger evaluation of our teachers performance, as well as the culture that was being set. Wanting to improve the overall achievement on students led us to change our assessment process. Moving to the M.A.P. (Measure of Academic Progress) assessment allows us to see growth throughout the year and the ability to address the issues we see to improve those scores.

  14. PLAN OF ACTION We increased our Professional Development We added a C.A.P.S. Program to address the socio-economic factors that affected our students We changed our assessment standards Hired more qualified teachers with degree’s in the specific discipline they teach

  15. Factors that Affect Student Achievement While meeting with our teachers we noticed that a big factor in student performance in the classroom was absences. One of the things we thought could improve student attendance was communication, tracking attendance, and being able to analyze the data. Our previous student management system, Hunter Systems, had an input for student attendance but did not give easy reports to analyze data.

Factors that Affect Student Achievement This outdated system did not give us the ability to send out mass text, email, and phone calls for communication with our parents Hunter systems was also deficient in keeping students and parents aware of student progress through an online portal. Our response to these deficiencies was to change our student management system.

  17. Factors that Affect Student Achievement Our new Student Management System is called Grade Link. This system has improved our communication ability between teachers, staff, parents and students. Has online portal for parents and students to check attendance records, grades, discipline infractions, homework assignments, view syllabuses, enrollment and much more!!! Gives the ability for teachers and parents to more easily communicate via email through the system

Factors that Affect Student Achievement Tracks and gives reports Online portal for parents and students has an app System allows us to see what parents are actually logging in and using the system. Currently our data shows that we have a total of 78% present attendance and 21.49% absent for the year A considerable amount of that attendance issue is with students in the 12th grade.

  19. Factors That Affect Student Achievement We also looked at other factors that affected attendance like discipline infractions that led to suspensions, and social factors. This year we have 1184 total discipline infractions Many of these infractions can be tied back to the at-risk population that we primarily service. Our response to helping our students was to try and cut down on these infractions to keep students in class and at school.

  20. PLAN OF ACTION A few simple things we added were: Student observation/behavior logs Instead of teachers writing referrals for things such as sleeping in class, not completing assignments, and being out of their seats. Teachers address these issues in the class, monitor these behaviors and write them down in journals. This allows us to better communicate with parents and have a track record of issues in the class. And discuss ways to reach these students in teacher meetings.

  21. PLAN OF ACTION We also implemented the C.A.P.S. Program to help with the socio-economic factors that affect students. The Counseling And Professional Service is available to offers special services for (1.) Specific Learning Disabilities (2) Emotional/Behavioral Disability (3)Referral on Speech Impaired. CAPS also monitors social issues in the students home environment, and addresses those issues with counseling sessions, and or referrals to Lakeview Treatment Center when necessary. CAPS is headed by Master Social Worker Jenny Reed

Counseling, Assessment, Professional Services - CAPS Referral from teacher, Dean, or Principal Deal with behavioral/emotional issues Assess student and document interaction Advocate for underserved students with administration and parents Facilitate small groups to educate about respect, attitude, appropriate behavior Develop rapport with students Find gaps and solutions for needed services Set weekly goals for students Evaluate goals with students Evaluate classroom environment for student management and bias Contact parents and set conferences Report signs of abuse, neglect, suicidal thoughts
