Thermal Energy and Temperature • Temperature - the average amount of energy of motion of each particle of a substance. • Measures how hot or cold • Thermal Energy – the total energy of motion in the particle of a substance.
Measuring Temperature • Air temperature is usually measured with a thermometer.
Measuring Temperature Continued • Temperature Scales • Temperature is measured in units called degrees • Celsius Scale • Pure Water • Freezing: 0ºC • Boiling: 100ºC • Fahrenheit Scale • Pure Water • Freezing: 32ºF • Boiling: 212ºF
Converting Units • From Fahrenheit to Celsius • ºC = 5/9(ºF – 32) Suppose it is 68ºF ºC = 5/9(ºF – 32) ºC = 5/9(68 – 32) ºC = 5/9(36) ºC = 20
How Heat is Transferred • Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler one. • Heat is transferred in three ways • Radiation • Conduction • Convection • Radiation, conduction, and convection work together to heat the troposphere.
