Essential Question • Explain the difference between epidemic and pandemic as it relates to the spread, treatment, and prevention of disease. http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/8E5F7D1B-1DA1-4439-9390-02C5E01AD48C http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/1C65DDC1-20FD-48D4-B50E-187EDE5BB89E
Disease Outbreaks • An event that occurs when a disease spreads in greater numbers than expected. • The two types of disease outbreaks are epidemic and pandemic.
Epidemic • A disease that spreads in a certain region. • Lower number of people affected (than pandemic). • Smaller region affected (than pandemic). • Ex: Malaria that spreads in a region in Africa; Swine flu that spreads from Mexico to North America.
Pandemic • An epidemic that affects the global population. • Higher number of people affected (than epidemic). • Larger region affected. (Usually global) • Ex: Malaria - Africa → rest of the world; Swine - Mexico → New Zealand, Israel, Scotland, and etc.
Influenza Pandemics • An influenza pandemic occurs when: A new subtype of virus arises. • New viruses may cause a pandemic due to: • Unprepared immune systems • Easy transmission/spreading • Affects different parts of the world at different times. • Rate of Infection: 6 to 9 months to spread globally. (Even faster with air travel.)
Examples of Disease Outbreaks • The Spanish Influenza killed 40-50 million people. (1918) • The Asian Influenza killed 2 million people. (1957) • Hong Kong influenza killed 1 million people. (1968) • Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) killed 800 people globally.
Treatment and Prevention • Antibiotics – treat diseases caused by bacteria. • Vaccines – create immunity against viruses. • Good Hygiene – prevent spread of germs and bacteria.
