  2. Cover Letter • Dear IEEE chairmen, • I would like to invite you to consider the attached liaison request drafted by the ETSI ITS Technical Committee. Our original liaison request was incomplete because missing some of the right recipients. We hope that we are now covering all relevant actors and that we may start soon collaborating. • We look forward for your reply. • Kind regards, • Bernardo CorreiaExternal Relations OfficerETSI - www.etsi.org650, Route des LuciolesF-06921 SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS CEDEXFRANCE • Office: + 33 (0)4 92 94 43 67Mobile: +33 (0)6 80 18 17 39                   Fax: +33 (0)4 93 65 47 16email: bernardo.correia@etsi.org Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)

  3. Letter Contents 1. Overall Description: The ETSI TC ITS requests liaison with the IEEE 802.11 (Task Group p) and IEEE P1609. The objective of the liaison is to share information and promote cooperation towards the development of ITS related standards and specifications. 2. Actions: To IEEE802.11 and IEEE P1609 By this letter, ETSI TC ITS requests liaison with IEEE 802.11 and IEEE P1609 working groups. Specifically, ETSI TC ITS seeks to officially establish a link with the IEEE 802.11 and IEEE P1609 working groups and to share information towards the development of ITS-related standards. The ETSI TC ITS agrees to provide the IEEE 802.11 and IEEE P1609 working groups with regular status updates and to share working documents in collaboration. The IEEE 802.11 and IEEE P1609 working groups are requested to reciprocate. The dissemination by one party of the documents received from the other party shall be strictly limited to the members of IEEE 802.11 and IEEE P1609 working group members and members of ETSI TC ITS, and solely for the purpose of technical activities relating to the party's work programme. The IEEE 802.11 working group is requested to respond to this request at its earliest convenience. 3. Dates for upcoming ETSI TC ITS meetings (Sophia Antipolis, France): ETSI TC ITS working groups 12-16 January 2009 ETSI TC ITS plenary 20-24 April 2009 Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)

  4. Medical Devices A New Work Item (NWI) was recently approved in ETSI ERM Task Group 30 (Wireless Medical Devices) with a scope as indicated below: “Develop a Systems Reference Document (SRDoc) for future requirements for High Capacity, Low Power Active Medical Implant (LP-AMI) and peripherals (LP-AMI-P) medical wireless telemetry and telecontrol systems operating in sub bands which frequencies are within the range 406 - 3000 MHz and with various bandwidths applicable to each sub band to cover the rapidly increasing market demand for medical monitoring applications and need for ultra high speed transmission rates due to increasing industry needs. [ETSI ERM TG30#13_13r1]” In subsequent meetings of TG30, the band of 2483.5 to 2500 MHz emerged as a possible candidate for this application. Our membership is aware of the numerous contributions made by IEEE membership related to the topics of 2.4 GHz propagation and interference, specifically in the 802.11 and 802.15 Working Groups. IEEE 802.15 Task Group 6 (Body Area Networks) is a specific example of a group defining a standard that is of particular interest to TG30 membership. To support our efforts related to the aforementioned NWI, ETSI ERM TG30 hereby requests liaison to the IEEE 802.11 and 802.15 Working Groups, and permission to access and study working group documents related to indoor propagation and interference in the 2.4 to 2.6 GHz frequency range. The dissemination by one party of the documents received from the other party will be strictly limited to the members of IEEE-SA WGs 802.11 and 802.15 and members of ETSI TC ERM TG#30, and solely for the purpose of technical activities relating to the party's work programme. Best regards, Peter Chadwick ETSI ERM TG30 Chairman Bruce Kraemer (Marvell)
