  1. We had a productive Research Opportunities Forum • November 10 - 12. Over 50 researchers took part • It is great to dust ourselves off and get back in action • Strong participation from off-site researchers who would like to get involved with the program (including MAST and DIII-D) - • Joint research proposals make for sound contributions to the ITPA process • Ed is flying back from Coordinating Committee meeting in Japan as this viewgraph is shown - greetings from somewhere over North America • Lesson learned - need to separate review from planning - probably means revival of Results Review during the week of the Forum • Sorry, this means more days, but it will be worth it

  2. Many challenges were identified at the Forum • For example, HHFW + NBI combination • We have to focus on this in a serious manner. Recall that this combination is central to goals in the Five Year Plan. If it works well, we need to know the physics. If it is hard and we need to change course, we have to know why. • Coupling & control, HHFW interactions with fast particles, transport and interplay between electron and ion conduction channels - all need to be understood

  3. The HHFW + NBI effort will involve several ETs • Following the Forum, discussions are beginning to identify the primary experimental approaches • These will lead to XPs to be developed in HHFW/EBW, Transport & Turbulence, and ISD ETs. • If the team develops a multiday, multidisciplinary approach, then several of the ETs will share the cost in run days.

  4. We need approved XPs so as to have a program plan mapped out before the new year • The demands of a 21 week run will be high - one area where we have control and can ease the stress is in developing XPs in a timely manner. • The ETs need to support Stan’s run coordination effort so that our approved XPs are in place well in advance of their run time • The plan will of course evolve to meet our needs, but the point is that your ET groups should be developing XPs now • Aim to have a run schedule, developed before the holiday break, with approved XPs for the first few weeks of the run

  5. Other program News: several pre-proposals with NSTX involvement for Fusion Science Centers have been sent to DoE • Modeled after NSF Centers for Excellence • At most a $2 M/year pot for at most 2 centers (less than hoped for) • Center must be hosted by a university, with at most 20% of funds going to national labs. • NSTX is part of 3 preproposals out of at least 13 total • Center for Advanced Microturbulence Studies (Luhmann,UC Davis, host) • Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (Dorland, Maryland) • Center for Energetic Particles & Alfvén Turbulence (Heidbrink, UC Irvine)
